On Wednesday morning, Orb made his first appearance on a race track since winning the Kentucky Derby, and it must have made him feel right at home.
Trainer Shug McGaughey sent Orb out on a rainy morning. He jogged a mile over a main track rated sloppy under regular exercise rider Jennifer Patterson. Orb won the Kentucky Derby on a sloppy/sealed track.
McGaughey said he'd planned to gallop Orb but opted for less after the track came up wet.
But McGaughey said Orb will gallop Thursday. He envsisions a Monday workout, repeating the pattern that was followed before the Kentucky Derby.
“I thought he jogged really well,” said McGaughey. “I was pleased with what I saw. Seemed to be good and settled in, wasn’t all frazzled. He’s been eating really, really well since Saturday. It seems to me that all systems are go.
“I was glad to get him back to the track and get him going again, and see where he takes us,” the trainer said.
Only three horses registered timed workouts at Belmont on Wednesday.
