Kentucky Derby and Horse Racing at The Downey Profile®

New All-Source Handle Record Established at KD

By Dick Downey

For the second time this meet, Kentucky Downs has established an all-time high in all-source handle. The figure on day 4 of the meet approached $3 million.

Kentucky Downs handled $2,982,294 on Wednesday, Sept. 18. This eclipsed the record set on opening day, Sept. 7, when the figure was $2,837,897.

While today's card had 13 races, compared to 10 on opening day, the new figure is significant coming on a Wednesday. Opening day took place on a Saturday.

It's the 21st racing season at the track.  The Sept. 7 figure was a 108% increase over the 2012 opening day figure.

Kentucky Downs handled $2,816,019 on the second Saturday of the meet, Sept. 14. Activity on the first Wednesday of racing, Sept. 11, was shortened after a thunderstorm knocked out the tote system at the track. Six races were lost that day. Three extra races were carded on Sept. 18.

Live racing resumes at KYDownsRacing on Wednesday, Sept. 25, the fifth and final day of the meet.
