Kentucky Downs: Favorites Even Out on Day 4

9/23/2013

By Dick Downey

Day 4 of the Kentucky Downs meet saw a considerable drop in the number of winning favorites compared to the previous day of racing.

Three of 13 winners were the post-time favorite on day 4. This was a paltry number compared to day 3, when favorites won an astonishing nine of 10 races.

On day 4, it was "close but no cigar" for favorites no less than eight times -- the top betting choice ran second five times and third three times. That left only two races when favorite was not among the top three finishers.

After opening day saw a mere two of 10 favorites win, only one of four favorites was victorious during the shortened second day of racing. Lightning knocked out the tote after race 4.

Overall, with 37 races in the books, 15 of them (41%) have been won by favorites so far this meet. That's a significantly higher rate than the national average of 33%, a higher rate than the 2012 meet (37%), and a lower rate than the 2010 meet (50%) and 2011 meet (47%).

The final card of the five-day Kentucky Downs meeting begins on Wednesday at 12:35 CDT. Like last Wednesday, there will be 13 races on the card instead of originally-scheduled 10.
