UAE 2000 Guineas Set for Thursday, Draws 11

The UAE 2000 Guineas has attracted 11 entries, none of which were bred in the United States, and none of which is nominated to the Triple Crown. The race is set to go as the second on the card Thursday at Meydan Racecourse. While it doesn't carry any Kentucky Derby points, the UAE 2000 Guineas is a steppingstone to the UAE Derby, which awards 100 points to the winner.

Long John and Paximadia, both of whom formerly raced in Darley colors, will be wearing Godolphin blue in the race, which goes 1,600 meters, or about a mile.

Both horses were campaigned Down Under last year, when Long John was a good-looking maiden winner of the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas at Melbourne. Formerly trained by Peter Snowden, he's now in the hands of Charlie Appleby. Long John, a gelded son of Street Cry, was last seen running ninth, beaten 7 1/2 lengths, in the Group 1 Cox Plate in October.

Paximadia isn't as accomplished as Long River but is a group 2 winner, having taken the Sandown Guineas at Caulfield at the UAE 2000 Guineas dstance. He's now trained by Saeed bin Suroor.

Appleby also trains Safety Check, and bin Suroor handles Emirates Flyer.  Both of them will run in the colors of Sheik Hamdan bin Mohd Al Maktoum. Emirates Flyer comes in off a win in the primary prep for the UAE 2000 Guineas, the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial. Safety Check finished second in the Trial.

Both Long John and Paximadia were bred in the Southern Hemisphere -- Australia, to be exact -- and are therefore classified as 4-year-olds under north American rules. They are 3-year-olds under local rules.

Two others are in the same category, Journeyman and Full Combat, both bred in South Africa.

Journeyman is trained by Mike DeKock, the perenially successful trainer at the Carnival in Dubai. Journeyman was off the board in the Meydan Classic Trial just last week.

Full Combat, owned by Sheik Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is also trained by de Kock. He'll try to rebound from a fifth-place finish in the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial.

De Kock also trains Wednaan, who broke his maiden last September for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, and Jallota, who has lost eight straight races since breaking his maiden on Aug. 6.

My Catch was most recently third in the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial. Nezar finished seventh in that race. Asmar checked in third in the Saeed and Mohammed Al Naboodah Group Trophy on Feb. 1 in his most recent effort.
