Tamarando Completes Plan B in El Camino Real Derby

2/12/2014

Tamarando leads a field of eight in Saturday's 1 1/8-mile El Camino Real Derby, the signature race for 3-year-olds at Golden Gate Fields.

Exit Stage Left won the California Derby at the track and might have been favored this weekend, but when he came up injured late last week, Jerry Hollendorfer moved quickly to Plan B and named Tamarando. Hollendorfer also trains entry Puppy Manners, a son of Kitten's Joy that was fourth in the California Derby and will have Frank Alvarado up on Saturday.

Tamarando, by Bertrando, is a grade I winner, having taken the Del Mar Futurity last year. He also won the two-turn Real Quiet Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park. Of course, both of those wins came on synthetic surfaces, and that's what the late-running Tamarando will get again on Saturday.

The Grade III El Camino Real Derby will be Tamarando's second race this year. He was a non-threatening second to California Chrome in the California Cup Derby at Santa Anita three weeks ago this coming Saturday. Russell Baze is named to ride Tamarando.

Enterprising, trained by Tom Proctor, figures to be a crowd favorite as well. He finished a close second to Exit Stage Left in the California Derby and returns to the track with Gary Stevens back aboard in place of Aaron Gryder. It will be the fourth time in five starts that Stevens has been up on the son of Elusive Quality. Enterprising's most notable notable accomplishment so far was a victory in the Dec. 28 Eddie Logan Stakes on the turf course at Santa Anita.

Frank Lucarelli entered Infosec, third in the California Derby after an even trip. The son of Heatseeker (IRE) has a pair of wins on synthetic track at Hollywood and Golden gate. Isaias Enriquez will be in the irons.

Dance with Fate could be an imposing figure. After finishing second behind Tamarando in the Del Mar Futurity, he was runner-up in the FrontRunner Stakes. That led to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, when he finished eighth, beaten 9 1/4 lengths, after being squeezed at the start and going five wide. After a break of almost two months, the son of Two Step Salsa won an allowance optional claiming race on the turf at Santa Anita under Rafael Bejarano for trainer Peter Eurton. Gryder has the mount.

Craftsman (IRE), a group 3 winner in Ireland, comes in for Simon Callaghan after a disappointing fifth in the Eddie Logan, beaten 4 1/4 lengths by Enterprising. He was a little slow leaving the gate in his United States debut and adds blinkers on Saturday. Dennis Carr is named on the son of Mastercraftsman (IRE).

Doug O'Neill will give I'll Wrap It Up another shot. In his only other stakes race, the son of Tapit finished fourth to Midnight Hawk in the Sham, beaten 14 lengths. He followed that up with another fourth-place finish, this time by four lengths in the allowance race won by Dance with Fate. Juan Hernandez will ride.

Bob Baffert entered Icy Ride, a four-race maiden. Jose Valdivia, Jr. will ride for the first time. So far in his career, Icy Ride, by Candy Ride (ARG), has finished fifth to Indianapolis and fourth to Cool Samurai, El Nino Terrible and Hoppertunity, in that order.

The El Camino Real Derby carries 17 Kentucky Derby points with 10 to the winner and 4, 2 and 1 going to the next three finishers. Dance with Fate and Puppy Manners weren't early-nominated to the Triple Crown and can use the points only if late-nominated or supplemented.

The El Camino Real Derby is the eighth race on the Golden Gate card with a post time of 4:15 local time, 7:15 ET.
