Derby Future Wager Pool 3: Cairo Prince Favored Individual
By Dick Downey
The ‘All Others’ wagering interest, installed as the 6-1 favorite for Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3, closed as the 3-1 favorite, the same as it did in 2012 and 2013.
As previously announced, betting was halted just before post time for the Gotham Stakes, Saturday’s only points race on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” series.
Following a strong Saturday morning workout at Palm Meadows, Cairo Prince emerged as 9-1 top individual choice. Close behind at 11-1 were Top Billing and Honor Code, with the former being the actual second individual choice.
Next in line as favorites were Candy Boy (12-1), 2-year-old champion Shared Belief (15-1), Bayern (17-1) and Tapiture (17-1). Gotham winner Samraat closed at 30-1 and runner-up Uncle Sigh is 42-1.
A total of $334,326 was wagered during three days of KDFW Pool 3 betting that opened on Thursday, Feb. 27 at noon. Win wagering totaled $239,389 and there was $94,937 in the exacta pool. That compares to $407,038 during the comparable pool last year.
Combined betting in the first three pools of the KDFW 2014 stands at $952,654. There was a November pool for the first time in 2013. Last year, the first two of three pools handled $1,028,531.
The year’s fourth and final pool is set for March 27-29.
