Top Billing Off Triple Crown Trail

By Dick Downey

Top Billing was injured during a workout Saturday morning at Payson Park and is off the Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown Trail. The development could affect affect Honor Code's schedule.

The son of Curlin sustained a cracked cannon bone in his right front leg, according to trainer Shug McGaughey.

“We saw it after he pulled up from the breeze this morning,” McGaughey said. “We took him back to the barn, we x-rayed it and found it.”

Top Billing will be all right but it will take time.

“He’s going to Kentucky today. Hopefully he’ll get operated on tomorrow afternoon or first thing Monday morning,” McGaughey said after the mishap.

Top Billing has raced three times this year, all at Gulfstream Park. After finishing second to Commissioner in an allowance race, he won a similar race next time out and finished a closing third in the Fountain of Youth Stakes.

Honor Code

“I’m just looking for him to run a decent race,” McGaughey said of next Wednesday's allowance at Gulfstream. “I’d like him to win, but if he doesn’t, we’d like to see something to push on with.”

McGaughey said previously that the Wood Memorial is the penultimate target before the Kentucky Derby. Top Billing’s injury could mean that Honor Code will remain where he is for the Florida Derby.

“It’s a good possibility,” said McGaughey.

The trainer has scheduled Honor Code to breeze three furlongs at the track on Sunday.
