Kentucky Derby and Horse Racing at The Downey Profile®

California Chrome Going to Santa Anita Derby

By Dick Downey

It was up the air after his runaway win of the San Felipe Stakes, but California Chrome is now targeting the Santa Anita Derby.

Trainer Art Sherman confirmed the plan on Thursday. The race is on April 5.

“It’s a relief that we’ve made the decision,” Sherman said. “The horse will blow out a half-mile Saturday with Victor (Espinoza) on, and probably have one more half-mile before the race, then ship over five days before we run. The horse is acting really good right now.”

Winner of five of nine starts, the Cal-bred California Chrome is on a roll. He's won his last three races by a combined margin of 19 lengths.
