Mexikoma Off Derby Trail

3/20/2014

He didn't ever quite make it onto the Road to Kentucky Derby, and now Mexikoma is off the trail altogether.

The son of Birdstone came down with a lung infection that was reported at Bloodhorse.com on March 4. Mexikoma "has come down with a fever that forced him to miss several days of training," Team Valor president Barry Irwin told the publication. Irwin said he still hoped to give the colt a Kentucky Derby prep race in April but that team Valor feels Mexikoma is the kind of horse that is better suited for the Belmont Stakes.

"Looking at him just now, I see that his coat has improved 100 percent in just 10 days and gleams with a healthy glow," Irwin said today. "But standing behind him, I see that the muscle tone he lost during his 15 days of stall confinement has not fully returned.

Irwin added that there is concern breezing the horse this weekend could set him back.

Irwin and and trainer Rick Mettee will point Mexikoma to the Peter Pan on May 10 as a prep for the Belmont Stakes.

"What I like about the Peter Pan is it gives the colt that all-important race over the track," Irwin said.
