Baffert Seeks Sunland Repeat, Seven Shippers in All

3/21/2014

Bob Baffert and Todd Pletcher face three other shippers and two locals in the Sunland Derby on Sunday. Baffert has won the Sunland Derby twice, including last year’s triumph with Govenor Charlie.

Midnight Hawk is a battled tested winner of the Sham Stakes and is the 5-2 morning line favorite with Mike Smith in the irons.

Chitu completes the Baffert one-two punch. He ran a strong second to Candy Boy in the Robert Lewis Stakles and has won twice from three starts. Martin Garcia, who was aboard Govenor Charlie last year, gets the call.

Todd Pletcher's stable is represented by Commissioner and Global Strike. Commissioner produced a rousing allowance win at Gulfstream Park last January but split the field in a much duller effort in the Fountain of Youth. John Velazquez will ride the 7-2 second favorite.

Global Strike showed great determination breaking his maiden at the Sunland Derby distance despite stumbling at the start. The son of Smart Strike will be ridden by the nation’s leading rider Javier Castellano. Pletcher's father Jake Pletcher was a leading trainer at Sunland Park in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Peter Miller ships in Garen. Lightly raced, Garen has upside potential. The son of Street Cry broke his maiden at Santa Anita in wire to wire fashion and his a half-brother to Invasor.

Cody Autrey’s Tanzanite Cat won the Smarty Jones Stakes. Subsequently, he battled on a contentious pace in the Southwest Stakes before finishing fifth to Tapiture.

Kellyn Gorder’s Bourbonize is a two-time winner is a legitimate threat and respected at 6-1 on the morning line.

The local human sensation is Justin Evans. The 32-year-old conditioner is having the most dominating year in Sunland Park history, on course to win over 100 races this meet. He is ranked nationally in the top five trainers for races won. Evans entered Rebranded. Privately purchased for six figures by Tony Pennington, Rebranded shipped in from the East Coast and broke his maiden in the $100,000 Riley Allison Futurity and was a good second in the $120,000 Mine That Bird Stakes. Evans hopes the large son of Tiznow has the home course advantage.

Lawly's Goal rounds out the field.

The $800,000 Sunland Derby carries 85 Kentucky Derby points with 50 to the winner, 20 to second, 10 to third and five to fourth.
