Trainer Jose Garoffalo said Friday that Wildcat Red will be shipped by air from Gulfstream Park to Churchill Downs on April 22.
Wildcat Red was last seen finishing a close second in the Florida Derby and is still doing well, the trainer said.
“He’ll have two works before the Derby. He’ll breeze here once on the 20th and then breeze again on the 27th at Churchill,” said Garoffalo. “He’s doing great. He came out of it great.”
Wildcat Red is assured of a spot in the starting gate on the first Saturday in May, ranking eighth in the qualifying-points standings.
The colt’s Derby jockey remains up in the air. Joel Rosario, Javier Castellano, Luis Saez and John Velazquez have all ridden Wildcat Red but have not committed to him for the first Saturday in May.
“I’m really excited about going to Kentucky,” Garoffalo said. “I think the most competitive horses raced at Gulfstream. Other than California Chrome in California, I think the best 3-year-olds raced here. Look at the Wood Memorial last week, the winner raced here and he didn’t do anything here.”
