Graham Motion said Sunday he’ll wait and see whether to enter Ring Weekend in the Kentucky Derby. The colt is 16th on the Derby leaderboard.
The Tampa Bay Derby winner ran a poor second to Our Caravan as the odds-on favorite in the Calder Derby last time out. That led him to a stint at Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland, where Motion keeps a barn.
“I want to see how he is training. I was a little disappointed in his last race, but he seems fine. I am puzzled as to why he ran so bad; maybe he bounced off the race at Tampa,” Motion said.
Motion, who saddled Animal Kingdom to win the 2011 Kentucky Derby, said he will keep Ring Weekend at Fair Hill for a while. The colt finished third going 1 1/16 mile at Churchill Downs last September.
“He will work there and we’ll see how he’s doing,” Motion said. “We will do the right thing by the horse. He has run a lot and he has run at Churchill Downs, so there is no need to rush there.”
