Kentucky Derby and Horse Racing at The Downey Profile®

Lexington Could Have Marginal Derby Impact

4/16/2014

The undefeated Divine Oath may be the best horse in Saturday’s Coolmore Lexington Stakes, which drew 11 entries. Only one horse in the field can climb near the top 20 in points for the Kentucky Derby with a win.

Shut out of the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, Divine Oath makes his stakes debut in the 1 1/16-mile race for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Pletcher has won the Lexington five times, including last year with Winning Cause. Divine Oath has won both of his starts going 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf at Gulfstream Park. Javier Castellano has the mount.

Pletcher also entered Supermonic and Global Strike. The latter most recently finished sixth, beaten 21 1/2 lengths by Chitu, in the Sunland Derby and is cross-entered in the Illinois Derby. Supermonic broke his maiden at Penn National on March 13 and won an allowance race at Keeneland just last Sunday.

The Coolmore Lexington is the final race with points on the road to the Kentucky Derby, with 17 points available, 10 going to the winner.

Ami’s Holiday, winner of the Grey Stakes at Woodbine in October, has 10 Kentucky Derby points and, with a win in the Lexington, would vault into 21st place on the Derby leaderboard, just ahead of Vinceremos. After wintering in Ocala and Oaklawn Park, Ami’s Holiday makes his 2014 debut for trainer Josie Carroll.

Mr Speaker won the Dania Beach and was runner-up in the Palm Beach for trainer Shug McGaughey, who considered entering him in the Toyota Blue Grass. Mr Speaker will make his Polytrack debut Saturday.

Poker Player and Solitary Ranger come in for Wayne Catalano after poor efforts in the Spiral Stakes.

Poker Player, running with blinkers off, won the Bourbon at Keeneland last fall when the race came off the turf. He’s done best when showing a closing kick.

Solitary Ranger, who usually shows early speed, won the Arlington-Washington Futurity last September and the Battaglia Memorial in early March.

The Coolmore Lexington is one of three stakes on Saturday’s 10-race program and will go as the ninth race with a 5:13 p.m. ET post time. Saturday’s first race is 1:05 p.m.
