Medal Count will make his next start in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands, trainer Dale Romans confirmed.
It will be the third race in 29 days for Medal Count, who won the Transylvania Stakes on opening day at Keeneland and followed it up with a runner-up effort in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes eight days later.
“Medal Count came out of the Blue Grass in great shape, and we’re looking forward to running him a mile-and-a-quarter in the Derby,” Romans said. “He’s trained at Churchill Downs most of his life and seems to really love the track. Ever since he’s come into the barn, I’ve been very high on him. I think he’s as good as any of the 3-year-olds we’ve had.”
Medal Count, who wintered in Florida, was taken back to Romans’ barn at Churchill after the Blue Grass. The trainer said the son of Dynaformer will return to the track on Wednesday. A workout schedule has not been set.
Medal Count earned 40 Derby points in the Blue Grass and is tied at number 17 on the leaderboard.
Robby Albarado will return on Medal Count. He rode the colt in the Transylvania and Blue Grass.
Spendthrift Farm has had four other Derby starters: Don’t Get Mad, fourth in the 2005 Derby a week after winning the Derby Trial. Atswhatimtalkinbout, fourth in 2003; and Action This Day and Greeley’s Galaxy in 2004 and 2005.
Medal Count has won three of seven starts to date, with earnings of $261,600.
