Ami's Holiday Connections Resist Derby Lure

If Ami’s Holiday wins the Coolmore Lexington Stakes, he will be number 21 on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard – but he won’t be in the Kentucky Derby no matter what happens, his owner says.

“He’s not going to make it,” Ivabn Dalos said. “It is too close to Derby. If we had an extra week, I would definitely consider it. Two weeks is too close.”

Ami’s Holiday has not raced this year. The Josie Carroll trainee won the Grey Stakes last fall and picked up 10 Derby points as a result. He wintered at Ocala and Oaklawn Park and breezed for the first time at Keeneland on March 30.

Dalos said he wanted to run Ami’s Holiday in the Toyota Blue Grass.

“We felt he wasn’t ready to go a mile and an eighth at this point. This is a mile and a sixteenth – a little shorter – so this is a more suitable race since we’re not going to the Derby,” he said.

Ami’s Holiday, a graduate of the 2012 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, is nominated to the Queen’s Plate. Dalos also mentioned the Preakness Stakes as a possibility.
