Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said Saturday that Cairo Prince has sustained an ankle injury and will miss the Kentucky Derby.
It’s unclear how long Cairo Prince will be out of action. He’ll be taken to Rood and Riddle Clinic in Lexington for further evaluation of his front left fetlock.
Cairo Prince was an early favorite for the Kentucky Derby after winning the Holy Bull Stakes on Jan. 25. He finished fourth as the favorite in the Florida Derby.
Cairo Prince last breezed on Sunday. A problem was noticed the next day, but McLaughlin thought at first it was part of a recurring foot problem, but as the week went on, he realized it was more serious. There is no sign of a fracture, and a nuclear scan will be performed to isolate the source of the problem.
Cairo Prince was number 19 on the Derby points leaderboard. Vinceremos was sitting at 21 before the defection.
