War Story Scratched from Southwest

By Dick Downey

War Story will return to the New Orleans after an early scratch from the Southwest Stakes. He was taken out of the race after drawing post 11 of 12.

War Story was a sharp runner-up in the Lecomte Stakes on Jan. 17 after breaking poorly, but connections decided on a change of scenery. He posted a :47.00 workout at Oaklawn on Wednesday in preparation for the Southwest.

“It just didn’t work out,” trainer Tom Amoss said. “We drew an outside post position and there’s a strong statistical negative to that post. Plus, there’s a forecast for dicey weather on Monday. He worked quite well at Oaklawn.”

The chestnut gelding will now ship back to Fair Grounds to prepare for his original target, the Risen Star Stakes on Feb. 21.
