Royal Son Best in Battaglia

2/28/2015

By Dick Downey

At 9-1 odds under Rodney Prescott, Royal Son went to the lead and stayed there in the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway Park

Royal Son's time was 1:46.84 in the 1/16 mile race.

The winner, who broke inward at the start, was chased by The Great War through the first turn, up the backstretch and into the final bend. It was just those two leaving the turn, but Royal Son separated himself and moved down the lane alone to win by 5 1/4 lengths.

The Great War faltered to a last place finish in the field of 10 and bled, according to the race chart published by Equibase. He raced with Lasix.

Pepper Roani (14-1) and Milwaukee Mist (66-1) completed the trifecta. Midnight Trace (13-1) was fourth. Royal Son paid $20.60 to win. The $2 exacta returned $235.80, the $1 trifecta $2,408.50 and the 10 cent superfecta $1,436.55.

Royal Son was last seen in an off-the-board finish in the Sam F. Davis Stakes. The Battaglia was his first effort on Polytrack, and he added blinkers.

The winner was bred in Kentucky by the owner, WinStar Farm LLC, and is by Tiznow out of the A.P. Indy mare Mama Nadine.
