After a departure from the worktab since Jan. 24, Texas Red is scheduled to have his first workout Saturday since returning to Santa Anita from rehab for a foot abscess.
Regular rider Kent Desormeaux will handle the workout. The son of Afleet Alex last raced Feb. 1, finishing a fast-closing, close second to Lord Nelson in the seven furlong San Vicente. Reports say Texas Red swam to get exercise while rehabbing.
Trainer and part-owner Keith Desormeaux still says he hopes use either the April 4 Santa Anita Derby or the April 11 Arkansas Derby as a steppingstone to the Kentucky Derby.
“We’ll let him stretch out," trainer Desormeaux said. "It won’t be any spectacular time, but we’ll do that next weekend. This one’s just to let him re-introduce himself.”
Desormeaux said the abscess issue is a thing of the past. “No issues. His next race will depend on the liveliness of his works; is he finishing well, is he galloping out well, is he coming back after the works in good shape," the trainer said.
“He looks great. He doesn’t look like he’s lost a bit of fitness, but it’s been a month, so we’ll have to see. Hopefully, he will be, but that is the goal.”
