Upstart, Frosted Work Six at PMM

3/13/2015

Upstart and Frosted were each on the worktab Friday morning at Palm Meadows, one of them in anticipation of a start in the Besilu Stables Florida Derby on March 28, the other one's status undecided.

Upstart was clocked in 1:13.40 in his second work since being disqualified from first to second in the Fountain of Youth Stakes.

“It was a terrific work,” trainer Rick Violette said. “He went in 13 and change and he got a good blow out of it. I don’t think the racetrack was all that fast when he was working around 8:30, 8:35. It was an excellent breeze for him. He came out of it good, so all systems are go. I’m thrilled with where we are.”

Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, Frosted posted a bullet work of 1:11.65 going in company with a pair of fellow Godolphin Racing-owned stablemates. The Tapit colt was in front and looked like a winner in upper stretch of the Fountain of Youth before suddenly dropping back and finishing fourth.

“We’re trying to eliminate some things that happened to him in the Fountain of Youth. We don’t know why he kind of pulled himself up or stopped. We put him behind horses today and we were very pleased with his work,” McLaughlin said. “What we were happy to see was a very serious work and that he did it the right way.”

McLaughlin said in addition to the Florida Derby, he is considering the Wood Memorial and Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, both on April 4.

“We’re happy with where we are, but we still don’t know exactly where we’re going,” he said.
