No Derby for Texas Red

3/17/2015

By Dick Downey

Texas Red is no longer under consideration for the Kentucky Derby according to a report published early Tuesday morning.

From the sound of it, the Santa Anita Derby and Arkansas Derby are also out of consideration.

Erich Brehm, a co-owner, told Bloodhorse.com, "We do not have adequate time to prepare Texas Red for a prep race that he would need to get in condition for, and attain adequate points for, a Derby start. We look forward to bringing him back to the races when he is ready to compete again at the highest levels."

The disclosure comes on the heels of Texas Red's first workout last weekend, which was a slow one, aftert returning from rehab for a foot abscess.

There's no word on whether trainer Keith Desormeaux might try to prepare Texas Red for one or both of the other jewels of the Triple Crown. Followers of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner will be looking to see when he puts in his next workout.
