Connections of Divining Rod, a late Triple Crown nominee, decided against going in one of the big three Kentucky Derby preps last weekend and instead will enter the Coolmore Lexington Stakes.
Divining Rod has 10 Derby points, and the 1 1/16-mile Lexington carries 10 to the winner. At this point, 20 points doesn't look like enough to make the top 20 Derby spots -- not that trainer Arnaud Delacour is pointing in that direction anyway.
“We nominated him for the Triple Crown in case we wanted to do that,” Delacour said. “It just didn’t work out the way we wanted, and now we are just taking it one race at a time.”
Divining Road started his 2015 campaign with a runner-up finish in the Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs. In the Tampa Bay Derby, he set the pace before fading to third, beaten 7 1/2 lengths by Carpe Diem.
“It is hard to be ambitious off a race like that,” Delacour said. “He is not up to the task yet.”
Divining Rod has worked three times since the Tampa Bay Derby, two in Florida and once at Keeneland on Sunday.
“I got him going a half-mile in :48 and out in a minute and change,” Delacour said. “I was very happy with that.”
As of Monday, Keeneland was listing only three probables for the Lexington: Divining Road, Henry Jones and Tiznow R J.
