Upstart Misses Workout

4/11/2015

By Dick Downey

According to a report, Upstart spiked a fever Saturday morning, leading to the cancellation of a planned workout. His temperature was not disclosed.

Trainer Rick Violette told Mike Welsch of DRF.com that he noticed a discharge from Upstart's nose after the colt cleaned his feed tub this morning. The report was initially published at DRF Nuggets.

"We took his temperature at that point and discovered he was running a slight fever," Violette told the publication. "Now we have to wait and see where this leads us. If he's really sick, we're in trouble. If it's a sinus thing that will blow over in a few days, we'll be okay.... If he has to stay in the stall a week, that's a different story.... Right now it's too early for me to say anything and have any credibility."

Violette has planned for Upstart to put in his workouts for the Kentucky Derby at Palm Meadows, then ship to Churchill Downs during Derby week. Today's misfortune leaves time for two breezes.

Any Kentucky Derby horses still in Florida two weeks from now will likely be shipped the following Tuesday.
