One Lucky Dane has been declared out of the Kentucky Derby after Rafael Bejarano noticed he was off immediately after a workout this morning at Santa Anita.
One Lucky Dane was credited with a five-furlong move in 59:20 (6/59), but Bejarano pulled him up quickly when the Santa Anita Derby runner-up felt wrong.
"It was left front (leg)," Bejarano told Bloodhorse.com. "I didn't want to take a chance. If I kept going, it could have been worse."
Trainer Bob Baffert confirmed One Lucky Dane would miss the Kentucky Derby.
"It's nothing obvious, but he's definitely off the Derby trail. Any little hiccup like that -- he didn't feel right and he pulled up. That's why you're never safe until you put the saddle on. But he looks like he's going to be OK," Baffert said.
Later, Baffert told Jay Privman of DRF.com that One Lucky Dane has the beginning of a condylar fracture and will need surgery. A tweet from another source said One Lucky Dane will be sidelined for four months.
The defection of One Lucky Dane moves Madefromlucky up to the 20th spot on the Kentucky Derby points leaderboard. Keen Ice is now number 21, and Frammento is sitting at 22 and Bold Conquest at 23.
