El Kabeir Confirmed for Derby after Belmont Work

4/19/2015

By Dick Downey

El Kabeir this morning worked on the main track at Belmont Park, and his camp said he'd be shipped to Churchill Downs on April 26 or 27.

Under exercise rider Simon Harris, El Kabeir was timed unofficially in 1:00 for five furlongs, breezing.  His internal fractions were logged in at 13.50, 25.58 and 37.00, out six furlongs in 1:13.03 and seven in 1:27.58.

It was El Kabeir's first workout since finishing third in the Wood Memorial after lagging several lengths behind soft early fractions. After the move, Justin Zayat of Zayat Stables tweeted, "ready for the Derby. 1 more work and ship."

C. C. Lopez has been riding El Kabeir. After the Wood Memorial, owner Ahmed Zayat was noncomittal about whether Lopez would be retained on El Kabeir if he went forward in the Kentucky Derby. El Kabeir won the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs under Calvin Borel. The three-time Derby winning jockey hasn't been publicly named for a horse in the 2015 Kentucky Derby as of this post.
