Carpe Diem’s early-bird workout at Keeneland went off as planned on Saturday, and Todd Pletcher said he'll take it. Meanwhile, International Star breezed at Trackside Training Center, and Tencendur and Keen Ice were on the worktab at Churchill Downs.

The move by Carpe Diem was officially timed by Keeneland clockers in  :48.60 for four furlongs with splits of 13.00 and 25.00. He galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.20, six in 1:14.80 and seven in 1:29.40. The track was rated fast.

"I thought he breezed great," Pletcher said. "There's very little I would change about the work. Sometimes in the dark they'll be a little more settled, and last time we were out there around 10:15 a.m. or whatever it was, there was a little bit of a crowd there, and he was probably just a little excited about that. But he was very settled, very good, progressive breeze. He picked it up each eighth, finished very well, galloped out good, and got it in over a perfect surface, so we're happy with it."

"Very good," said John Velazquez, who was aboard for the move. "Not much to say other than he allowed me to work him the way I like. We took it little by little in the first part of the work and then finished up really good."

Tencendur went out well before the time reserved for Derby and Oaks workers at Churchill Downs, beating the rain, and breezed five furlongs in 1:00, besting his workmate, Wake Up in Malibu, by a length. Clockers said his internal fractions were 11.60, 23.40, 35.20 and 47.40, and that he galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.00. The move was fastest of 35 at the distance before the renovation break.

Mike Maker went ahead and worked International Star at Trackside, abandoning any plan to have the move made at Churchill Downs. There were conflicting reports as to the length of the move, but Equibase reports it was four furlongs in 50.80 (8/9). According to a tweet by Jennie Rees, Maker said International Star went five furlongs in 1:02.40 with splits of 13.00, 25.40, 37.80 and 50.40. This breeze also went on a track rated fast.

Keen Ice, the most recent qualifier for the Kentucky Derby, came out after the renovation break Saturday at Churchill Downs and breezed five furlongs in 1:01.60 starting at the half-mile pole. His splits, according to track clockers, were 11.80, 24.00, 36.00 and 48.60. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:15.60. Tammy Fox handled the move. Keen Ice became eligible on Friday after Madefromlucky was declared out of the race.

We'll report separately on other workouts around the country on Saturday. Dortmund and Firing Line are expected at Santa Anita, Frosted and Upstart at Palm Meadows and Mubtaahij at Arlington Park.
