Frosted, Pletcher Threesome Finish Major Work

Trainer Todd Pletcher wrapped up major preparations for his three Belmont Stakes contenders Friday morning on the main track at Belmont, and Kiaran McLaughlin sent out Frosted.

Carpe Diem and Madefromlucky worked in tandem with Carpe Diem to the outside and outworking Madefromlucky by a length.

Carpe Diem, 10th in the Kentucky Derby, was credited by NYRA clockers with a four-furlong move in :47.66 under John Velazquez. Carpe Diem's gallop-out time for five-eighths was 1:00.59. Madefromlucky, winner of the Peter Pan Stakes last time out, was timed in :47.84 under Patti Krotenko. Madefromlucky galloped out in 1:01.10.

"I thought both horses worked well enough today to continue considering the Belmont," Pletcher said. "I didn't see anything that would deter me from it. I'll see how they come out of it, and talk with everybody, but we worked with the intention of running in the Belmont, and I thought they both worked well."

Pletcher expressed one small reservation. "I don't think this work was as impressive from (Madefromlucky) as last week. I think, like a lot of horses, they will tend to work better when they are on the outside, than the inside," Pletcher said.

Later, Pletcher had Materiality and Velazquez go out with regular workmate Stanford. Materiality started just behind Stanford and to his inside, and the pair moved in tandem throughout the breezed, timed in :47.78 for both. They galloped out five furlongs in 1:00.32.

"I thought he worked very well," Pletcher said of Materiality. "You know, he's the kind of horse who kind of does what his workmate does. It was a very good, progressive breeze, picking it up as they went along, with a very strong gallop out. He came back and he wasn't even blowing. He just took it all very well."

Frosted again worked in company with Godolphin Mile winner Tamarkuz and to his inside. Frosted was given a half-length head start and stayed ahead of his workmate with his rider sitting chilly. NYRA clockers timed the move in :47.84 for both horses.

"They went great," trainer McLaughlin said. "He worked so well last week with Tamarkuz, we decided to do the same thing today. They went 47 and four and in a minute and three fifths. It couldn't have gone better. We're all set."
