Belmont Contenders Reduced to Nine

By Dick Downey

Monday morning after American Pharoah breezed at Churchill Downs, Ken McPeek tweeted that The Truth or Else is out of the Belmont Stakes.

It was a short-lived campaign. McPeek announced The Truth or Else would run in the Belmont only last Thursday. The tweet says The Truth or Else has a filling in an ankle.

Edgar Prado was named to ride The Truth or Else. The colt would have come into the Belmont off a 1 1/16-mile allowance win at the track. This year, The Truth or Else finished second in the Southwest Stakes, fourth in the Rebel Stakes, seventh in the Arkansas Derby and fifth in the Pat Day Mile before winning the allowance.

The defection leaves nine in the Belmont: American Pharoah, Carpe Diem, Frammento, Frosted, Keen Ice, Madefromlucky, Materiality, Mubtaahij and Tale of Verve.

The announcement by McPeek came shortly after American Pharoah worked this morning at Churchill Downs. Last week after the Derby-Preakness winner worked, War Story was declared out of the Belmont by Tom Amoss and pointed to the Ohio Derby. A couple of days later, Conquest Curlinate was removed from Belmont consideration by Mark Casse for a possible shot at the Queen's Plate.
