Kentucky Derby and Horse Racing at The Downey Profile®

2015 TDP Subscription Wrap

6/8/2015

By Dick Downey

Greg "The Commish" Johnson and I don't consult before making selections. We each picked American Pharoaoh to win the Kentucky Derby. We followed that up by making him the top choice in the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes as well.

It'll probably never happen again, but Greg and I have now picked the winner of five of the last six Triple Crown series races.

In this year's Kentucky Derby, the top five horses in Dick's Picks produced the top five finishers.
1. AMERICAN PHAROAH (first)
2. DORTMUND (third)
3. FROSTED (fourth)
4. FIRING LINE (second)
5. DANZIG MOON (fifth)
6. CARPE DIEM (tenth)

The top four horses in Selections by The Commish produced the top four finishers.
1. AMERICAN PHAROAH (first)
2. DORTMUND (third)
3. FIRING LINE (second)
4. FROSTED (fourth)
5. CARPE DIEM (tenth)

Aside from the winner of the race, the Preakness Stakes outcome was born from chaos. Second finisher Tale of Verve  was the best of seven horses that didn't get hold of the track after a monsoon hit Pimlico. Firing Line, second in the Derby, was undone by the experience and didn't run a step. Dortmund hated it too, and so did the others, with one exception. American Pharaoh handled it.

Dick's Picks
MUDDY OR SLOPPY
1. AMERICAN PHAROAH (first)
2. FIRING LINE (seventh)
3. DORTMUND (fourth)
4. DANZIG MOON (sixth)

Selections by The Commish

2. DANZIG MOON (sixth)
3. FIRING LINE (seventh)
4. DORTMUND (fourth)

The Belmont Stakes resulted in the first sweep of the Triple Crown in 37 years.

Dick's Picks had the trifecta in exact order.
1. AMERICAN PHAROAH (first)
2. FROSTED (second)
3. KEEN ICE (third)
4. MATERIALITY (eighth)

Selections by The Commish produced the exacta and three of the top four finishers.
1. AMERICAN PHAROAH (first)
2. MADEFROMLUCKY (sixth)
3. FROSTED (second)
4. MUBTAAHIJ (fourth)

Over on the Research, Selections and More page, Greg picked seven right-on-top winners  with 10 winners overall appearing in his selections as well as five exactas, two trifectas and one superfecta from 12 races on the road to the Kentucky Derby.

Dick's Picks produced four right-on-top winners with 10 winners overall appearing in his selections, seven exactas, four trifectas and three superfectas from 14 races.

There were other features on Research, Selections and More, including our famous Lists containing complete profiles of the top 3-year-olds; Post-Race Highlights and Quotes where we try to discern true intent and thinking of connections; News and Commentary; and more.

Thanks so much to all our subscribers! We hope to see you for next year's runup to the Kentucky Derby and the Triple Crown series. Stay well and be safe.
