Kentucky Derby and Horse Racing at The Downey Profile®

Kentucky Downs Hits Weekly Handle Record

Kentucky Downs recorded $8,425,830 in parimutuel handle on historical horse racing from June 29 to July 5, 2015 to set an all-time weekly record.

The total bested the old mark of $8,332,610 that was set Feb. 24 to March 2, 2014. The record business levels followed Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) approval of 10 new wagers on the track's Encore system at its meeting on June 29. Kentucky Downs initiated its Encore terminals and wagers on April 2.

“It was very gratifying to see how our customers reacted to the new wagering mix,” said Kentucky Downs President Corey Johnsen. “I would like to thank the KHRC for their efforts and continued support. I would also like to recognize the operational teams from Encore and Kentucky Downs for making this a seamless transition for our customers.”

July 1 was the first day of full installation of the new games, with 165 of the 500 terminals on the floor offering the newly approved wagers. Kentucky Downs’ patrons showed their enthusiasm for the new product by setting a new record for a Wednesday, with historical horse racing handle of $1,098,041.

“I am very optimistic about this new product offering at Kentucky Downs,” said Johnsen. “This continues to support the hundreds of jobs that have been created in South Central Kentucky. The positive business trend will also have a major impact on the State of Kentucky with increased pari-mutuel taxes and more money to its signature horse industry in purses, Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund monies and breeders’ awards.”
