Citing safety considerations after overnight rain produced a yielding turf course, races 3 through 10 were cancelled at Kentucky Downs on Thursday. Six of the eight races will be rescheduled.
While there were no mishaps in the first two races, times were very slow, and track president Corey Johnsen noted that safety is always of utmost concern.
“Safety for jockeys and horses is always our number one priority,” Johnsen said.
The Sept. 12 racing card will be unaffected, but three additional races will be added on Sept. 16 and again on closing day, Sept. 19, subject to approval by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.
One stakes race was originally scheduled on today's card, but due to intense interest the One Dreamer was to be run in two divisions with 25 total entries. The One Dreamer will be rescheduled for Sept. 19.
Kentucky Downs was approved for five live racing dates this year, making it virtually impossible that an additional day of racing can be added to make up for the cancelled races.
Racing will resume on Saturday, Sept. 12 featuring the $600,000 Grade III Kentucky Turf Cup, Dueling Grounds Derby, Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint Stakes and the Kentucky Downs Turf Dash Stakes. First post is 1:35 CDT.
First post on Sept. 16 and 19 will be moved up to 12:05 CDT.
