Kentucky Derby and Horse Racing at The Downey Profile®

'He’s definitely changed physically....'

Gun Runner in Second CD Work

Gun Runner put in a second breeze at Churchill Downs today for the Kentucky Derby.

He went five furlongs in 1:01.00, breezing. Churchill Downs clockers caught the son of Candy Ride in splits of 12.40, 24.20 and 36.40, Gun Runner finished in 24.60. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.20.

The Louisiana Derby winner breezed a half mile in :50.60 at the track on April 4.

“He’s very manageable; he’s getting over the ground well,”said  assistant trainer Scott Blasi. “He’s got plenty of time, so this was just a nice maintenance work for him.”

Blasi discussed how Gun Runner has developed this year.

“He’s definitely changed physically and he’s getting there,” Blasi said. “He’s still playful, but he’s definitely getting there. It’s nice to have him here. He’s settled in how we’ve wanted him to, and hopefully we’ll have good works leading up to the Derby.”

Blasi said Gun Runner, who has earned the most points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard with 151, will breeze again next Monday.

Mo Tom, fourth in the Louisiana Derby after being checked sharply in the stretch, is likely to breeze at Churchill Downs on Wednesday, according to trainer Tom Amoss.
