Gun Runner Breezes, Decision Pending

Gun Runner put in a workout Monday morning, nine days after running third in the Kentucky Derby.

The four-furlong move was timed by Churchill Downs clockers in 51.40, breezing, with the first quarter-mile going in 25.40. Gun Runner galloped out five furlongs in 1:04.60.

The timing of the workout was typical for the Asmussen stable, coming nine days after Gun Runner's most recent race. Asmussen also tends to work horses on Mondays before Saturday races.

An announcement as to whether Gun Runner will compete in the Preakness Stakes is pending. David Fiske, ownership's racing manager, said Sunday that Gun Runner's condition will be assessed on Tuesday morning.

Jockey vectors show Gun Runner hasn't been ruled out.

Last week, Twitter was abuzz with posts about Florent Geroux, who rode Gun Runner in the Kentucky Derby, accepting the mount on Laoban if Gun Runner skips the Preakness. Yesterday, however, Ricardo Santana, Jr. was named to ride Laoban by trainer Eric Guillot. With nothing set in stone about Gun Runner, Guillot apparently needed a firm commitment. Santana is a regular rider for the Asmussen barn and was aboard Asmussen trainee Creator in the Derby.

Gun Runner's status could be announced as early as Tuesday, but the deadline is Wednesday, when entries are due and the last charter flight leaves Louisville for Baltimore.

"Decision re: #Preakness late Tuesday or early Wednesday (aka last possible moment)," Fiske tweeted yesterday.

Creator was also on the worktab at Churchill, four furlongs in 51.60 (39/42), breezing.
