Governor Malibu Breezes

By Dick Downey

New shooter Governor Malibu worked five furlongs on the Belmont main track Friday as his camp pondered the Belmont Stakes.

He was timed in 1:01:15 (2/8). NYRA clockers caught Governor Malibu in splits of 23.80 and 48.20. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:14 2/5.

"It was a nice work. Joel Rosario was aboard and he looked well," said trainer Christophe Clement. "We are not sure at this point. We are leaning toward the Belmont Stakes, but of course, nothing is certain."

Governor Malibu work five furlongs breeze either next Friday or Saturday, said the trainer.

He would enter the Belmont Stakes off a closing second-place effort behind Unified in the Peter Pan Stakes. Before that race, Governor Malibu was disqualified to second in the Frederico Tesio Stakes after he interfered with Awesome Speed.
