Another Issue for Classic Empire

Back Problem Today

By Dick Downey

Classic Empire was set back on Friday when his training session was cut short. According to a report at DRF.com, the colt would not begin a serious workout at Palm Meadows.

Classic Empire was being pointed to tomorrow's Fountain of Youth Stakes, but that plan was scuttled after he developed a foot abscess following a third-place finish as the heavy favorite in the Holy Bull Stakes.

Trainer Mark Casse waited for the abscess to resolve with treatment and started sending Classic Empire out to gallop.

Jay Privman reported that the trainer planned a workout for today, and Julien Leparoux was aboard. According to the report, Casse said the Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner would not break into his work and was favoring his back after going back to the barn. Casse said his feet are fine.

A chiropractor will examine Classic Empire, and he'll be allowed to roll around in a pen, which could resolve the issue
