Practical Joke 'Super'

Brown Narrows Things Down

By Dick Downey

Practical Joke breezed a half mile at Palm Meadows today, and Chad Brown said he liked what he saw and is closer to deciding on what's next.

“I’ve narrowed it down the either the Florida Derby or the Blue Grass," Brown said. "I sort of want to see where everybody’s going in. I’m going to go as far as to enter him in the Florida Derby and see where he draws and how it shapes up. I’m not going to totally commit to that until I see all that."

Practical Joke's workout, clocked in 48.75, was his first since his second-place finish behind Gunnevera in the Fountain of Youth Stakes on March 4. It was his 3-year-old debut.

“The horse worked super. He got a lot out of that race. I was very happy with his first race back,” Brown said.

Practical Joke, who had to be steadied on the first turn, made a three-wide run on the far turn and outfinished pacesetter Three Rules. Last year, he won the Hopeful and the Champagne Stakes, both grade I races. He concluded his juvenile campaign running third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
