Trainers Seek to Repeat in Sunland Derby

3/20/2017

Four Conditioners Seek Another Victory

Bronze Age, trained by Bob Baffert, is the early headliner for Sunday's Sunland Derby, but four trainers, including Baffert, are slated to try to win the race again.

Last seen scoring a front-running victory in a one-mile maiden race at Santa Anita Park on Feb. 18, the son of Mineshaft has recorded two strong workouts at Santa Anita since that victory. Baffert, no whose presence is no stranger to Sunland Park, has won the Sunland Derby with Wanna Runner (2004), Govenor Charlie (2013) and Chitu (2014), and Bronze Age could be the favorite this year.

Conquest Mo Money represents the strongest chance for a local horse to win since Song of Navarone took the race in 2007. Owned by leading owners Judge Lanier Racing led by Tom and Sandy McKenna, Conquest Mo Money has won three career starts this year, all at Sunland Park. The $8,500 purchase broke his maiden on Jan. 6 and returned to score in the Riley Allison Derby and the Mine That Bird Derby.

In the Mine That Bird, the Uncle Mo sophomore turned away a challenge from Southern California shipper Irap to prevail by two lengths. The Miguel Hernandez has a high cruising speed and holds a firm grip on local favoritism.

Irap is set to return for Doug O’Neill. He's a maiden but has hit the board in the Los Alamitos Futurity, the Robert B. Lewis Stakes and the Mine That Bird Derby. O’Neill saddled Sunland Derby winners in 2003 and 2005 with Excessivepleasure and Thor’s Echo.

Total Tap is trained by Steve Asmussen, who won this race in 2012 with Daddy Nose Best. Total Tap, a two-time winner, comes in off an allowance victory at Fair Grounds on Feb. 18. Oaklawn Park maiden winner Hence may also come in for Asmussen.

Shareholder Value races for trainer Tom Amoss, who won the 2008 Sunland Derby with Liberty Bull. Shareholder Value split the fields in both the Lecomte Stakes and the Risen Star Stakes and looks to step up his game.

Todd Pletcher’s Hedge Fund is a son of Super Saver with a maiden win at Gulfstream Park. D. Wayne Lukas’ Dilettante and Ken McPeek’s Oxford Lane remain potential Sunland Derby runners.

Local horses Ol’ Drunk Daddy for Paul Smith, Wine N Devine for Greg Green and Oh So Regal for Hernandez are also in the mix.
