After Gunnevera worked at Gulfstream Park West on Saturday, traininer Antonio Sano said he is waiting for a decision by Javier Castellano for the Kentucky Derby.
“I need to wait for the race today at Oaklawn for Castellano,” said Sano. Castellano is slated to ride the undefeated Malagacy in the Arkansas Derby.
Castellano has been aboard the son of Dialed In for all his races this year, including a 5 3/4-length victory in the Fountain of Youth on March 4 and was well as victories last year in the Delta Downs Jackpot and Saratoga Special.
Gunnvera breezed five furlongs in 1:00.60 (3/13) under Edgard Zayas. It was his first workout since finishing third in the Florida Derby.
“It went very well. He galloped out very, very good,” Sano said. “He was very relaxed, very quiet, very good. I know the next race is not going to be an easy race, but my horse is working very good."
Gunnevera is scheduled to work once more at Gulfstream Park West before shipping to Churchill Downs next on April 22.
