Begins on Thursday
Jose Ortiz won the 2016 Eclipse Award for best jockey, won his first Triple Crown race on Tapwrit in the Belmont Stakes, and is fresh off his second straight Saratoga riding title. Now he's coming to Kentucky Downs for the first time.
He doesn’t have mounts for Wednesday due to prior commitments but will start Thursday, named to ride six races: four for Mike Maker and two for Wesley Ward.
"I ride for Mike the whole year round,” said Ortiz. “We have a great relationship. I love Mike. I love to ride for him. He's put me on a lot of his horses. I've just very happy for the opportunity to go there.
"There is a lot of money there at the same time. He's the leading trainer, so why wouldn't you take advantage of an opportunity like that?
“Mike says he's got one in (almost) every race, so I think we're going to ride a lot while we're there.”
