Kentucky Derby and Horse Racing at The Downey Profile®

Kentucky Downs, HBPA team for Sunday's College Day at Kentucky Downs

Tablet giveaway after each race; two $1,500 scholarships
Full-time college students will have the chance to win one of 10 Microsoft® Surface tablet computers or one of two $1,500 scholarship on College Day at Kentucky Downs, held Sunday, Sept. 9 in conjunction with the Kentucky HBPA.
College students with a valid I.D. card or other documentation from a recognized university, two- or four-year college, technical or community college are eligible to sign up to win via drawing one of the Microsoft® Surface tablets given out after each race, as well as one of two $1,500 scholarships. The tablets are courtesy of the Kentucky Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, which represents horse owners and trainers at the state’s five thoroughbred tracks. Kentucky Downs sponsors the scholarships.
Sign-ups will begin at 12:30 p.m. Central Sunday near the merchandise stand and not far from the finish line. College students, their friends and family can enjoy 10 horse races, including the $400,000 Dueling Grounds Derby and $300,000 Exacta Systems Dueling Grounds Oaks. Students must be present to win.
Admission and parking are always free at Kentucky Downs. Sunday also is the meet’s last Family Fun Day, with a petting zoo, face painting and pony rides. Post time for the first race is 1:25 p.m. Central.
“To create a new generation of horse-racing fans, you first have to get them to the racetrack,” said Marty Maline, executive director of the Kentucky HBPA. “And the best way to get them to come back is to have a fun, festive experience. Kentucky Downs, with its outdoor fair-like atmosphere serving as the backdrop for world-class racing, is an ideal setting.
“Racing appeals to people in a variety of ways, from the beauty of the horse, to the excitement of a race, to the brain challenge of deciphering which horse will be first at the finish. And Kentucky Downs, with its unique flavor, is just a cool place to hang out. We believe once people come out here, they’ll want to come back.”
Said Amber Norris, Kentucky Downs’ director of marketing: “When you’re in college, every little bit helps. Every college student can use a new tablet, especially a sleek one like the Surface tablet, or $1,500 toward college expenses. We encourage those pursuing post-secondary education to join us Sunday. We encourage the moms and dads who might be paying for that education to tell their college kids, and to come along. You might not win one of our College Day prizes, but you’ll have a good time.”
