Alwaysmining Much the Best in Miracle Wood

2/16/2019

By Dick Downey

Alwaysmining, under a good ride by Daniel Centeno, won the one-turn, one-mile Miracle Wood Stakes today Laurel Park by 4 1/2 lengths.

Sent off as the 3-5 favorite, the Kelly Rubley trainee opened up in the stretch to get the mile in 1:35.27.

Centeno glanced back at the competition a couple of times in the backstretch after going the first half-mile in fractions of 24.23 and 47.51 as he was pursued most closely by Gray Magician and Wendell Fong. Centeno shook up his willing runner at the top of the lane, and they quickly separated themselves from the competion.

Gray Magician, who was 1-5 in the early betting and sent off at 2-1, finished second with Flavien Prat in the saddle. Tybalt closed from last but flattened out in the stretch and was nosed out at the wire to finish third. They were followed by Wendell Fong, Mount Travers and Trainfourtwentyone.

Daniel Centeno: "We got the inside hole again today and just wanted to break sharp and get the lead. He broke sharp and ran strong."
