The El Camino Real Derby seemed like it was won by a pole, but it was actually a seven-length margin laid down by a dominating Anothertwistafate, ridden by Juan Hernandez and trained by Blaine Wright.
The time for the 1 1/8 mile race on the Tapeta surface at Golden Gate Fields was 1:50.38. The locally-based Anothertwistafate led after a quarter-mile in 23.38, a half in 49.09 and six furlongs in 1:13.78.
Sent off as the 6-5 favorite, the winner returned his $2 backers $4.40, $2.60 and $2.40.
The Bob Baffert-trained Kingly, who was shipped from southern California to San Francisco after being scratched from the Risen Star Stakes, was all about seconds. The 9-5 second choice, he finished second under Evin Roman after pursuing the winner in second position at each call of the race.
More Ice, who's also based in southern California but was shipped up early to get in a couple of works over the track, was sixth in the early going but never more than 2 1/4 lengths behind. He finished third, beaten 9 1/2 lengths. Angelo's Pride, a local runner, was fourth at 48-1 odds, after tracking More Ice throughout the race.
Finishing behind the top four were Weekly Call, Mayor Cobb, The Creep, Rey Coliman, Data Hawk, King of Speed and Knight's Cross. Eagle Song and Royal Insider were scratched.
Kentucky Derby points were on the line in the El Camino Real Derby, and Anothertwistafate was awarded 10 for his victory. Four points go to Kingly, two to More Ice and one to Angelo's Pride. All four horses are nominated to the Triple Crown, and none of them had picked up any points in the past.
With his El Camino victory, Anothertwistafate receives an automatic berth in the Preakness Stakes, but owner Peter Redekop was thinking bigger than that. “There are a lot of races out there, and we need to get the points. One race in March and one in April, and then the big one.”
