O'Briens Train Five of Eight Entries
By Dick Downey
The Patton Stakes, one of three remaining European Road to the Kentucky Derby races, is set to go Friday at 2:45 pm ET and will be run on Dundalk's synthetic surace at a mile.
Two other Euro-Road races remain on the schedule, the Road to the Kentucky Derby Condition Stakes set for next Wednesday and the Cardinal Stakes on April 11.
The Patton has eight entries, five of them trained by an O'Brien. Aiden O'Brien has three and Joseph O'Brien has two.
The morning line favorite here in the U. S. is Western Australia (IRE) at 3-2. He drew the outside post and is trained by Aiden O'Brien. Ryan Moore is named to ride Western Australia for the first time, and this will be the seventh career start for the son of Australia (GB). Western Australia, who has one win from six starts, makes his 2019 debut.
Of the eight entries, two were early-nominated to the Triple Crown: Van Beethoven (ON), a son of Scat Daddy trained by Aiden O'Brien that is also making his first start of the year, and Western Australia.
Only one horse can make the Kentucky Derby from the European Road. The Patton is worth 20-8-4-2 points to the top four finishers, as is the race next Wednesday. The Cardinal has a 30-12-6-3 point structure.
Complete entries can be viewed on the Patton Stakes PPs.
