Fukuryu Stakes Final Leg on Japan Road to Derby

3/28/2019

The Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby will conclude Sunday with the running of the Fukuryu Stakes at Nakayama going 1,800 meters, which is about 1 1/8 mile.

The race will award the top four finishers 40-16-8-4 Kentucky Derby points on the Japan Road. Only one horse can be invited to the Kentucky Derby from that route, and it remains to be seen if anything from Japan will be in the starting gate on May 4.

The field of eight is led by Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun winner Nova Lenda. Trained by Takashi Saito and ridden by Shu Ishibashi, Nova Lenda has 20 potential points on the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby. He isn't nominated to the Triple Crown, but there is time to late-nominate him if connections so choose. Monday is the deadline.

Also entered is Triple Crown nominee Master Fencer, who finished fourth in the Hyacinth Stakes on Feb. 17. He's the only Triple Crown nominee in the race.

The Fukuryu Stakes is carded as Race 10 with a scheduled post time of 1:50 a.m. ET Sunday.
