Haikal has come up with a foot abscess that makes his Kentucky Derby status uncertain.
The news comes a day after presumptive favorite Omaha Beach came out of the race with what trainer Richard Mandella says is an entrapped epiglottis.
Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin didn't send Haikal to the track today, leading to inquiry about his status and the ensuing report about his sore foot, first out at DRF.com.
McLaughlin said he would send Haikal to the track training Friday morning and make a decision. The Derby scratch deadline is 9:00 a.m. ET on Friday.
Omaha Beach drew post 12. His scratch moved horses to the outside of that post one slot inward, leaving post 20 for Bodexpress, the lone also-eligible.
Should Haikal scratch, post 1 would be left open, and the 19 starters would be loaded into gates 2 through 20.
