Chance It Out of Fountain of Youth

Post Position Cited

When he drew the outside post with Chance It in the Fountain of Youth Stakes, trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. was immediately concerned. Only eight entries had been expected by most of those in the know, but 12 were entered, leaving him in a place with poor statistics this meet.

The morning of the race, with only one prior defection among the unexpected entries having been announced, Joseph took Chance It out of the race.

“We thought about it long and hard,” Joseph said. “It’s a tough post to overcome. I’ve never had a horse like this. I want to respect him and do what’s right. I want to give him a fair chance.”

Joseph said the colt would be pointed toward the March 7 Tampa Bay Derby. He'll go there without the services of Tyler Gaffalione, who has a prior commitment.
