Shared Belief Honor A. P.'s Final Stop on Derby Trail

7/30/2020

Del Mar’s $100,000 Shared Belief Stakes, which is ungraded, is a this-year-only Derby Prep that  normally is run at a mile near the end of August. Because of its new role, it was shifted to the beginning of August, lengthened to 1 1/16 mile, and will carry Kentucky Derby points of 50-20-10-5 for its first four finishers.

Heading the lineup is Honor A.P., a ridgling by Honor Code and a grandson of champion and prolific sire A.P. Indy. He comes into the race for trainer John Shirreffs off a tally in the Santa Anita Derby on June 6. He was second in the San Felipe at Santa Anita in his race prior to that and has been training forwardly at Del Mar. Mike Smith, who has handled Honor A.P. in all four of his starts, once again has the call Saturday.

Honor A. P. is the morning line favorite at 8-5. Uncle Chuck was set at 9-5 but is poised to be scratched so he can ship out of town to compete in the Travers Stakes a week later.

Bob Baffert sends out Cezanne, who'll have Flavien Prat in the irons, seeking a third win in three starts. His stable mate, the much more experienced Thousand Words, will be ridden by Abel Cedillo while seeking his first win of 2020.

Kiss Today Goodbye (Umberto Rispoli) is expected to round out the field. Anneau d'Or looks likely to scratch in favor of the Ellis Park Derby.

The Shared Belief will be the second of 11 races on the Saturday card, which also features the Grade I Bing Crosby Stakes and the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Stakes.

First post on all programs at Del Mar this summer is 2:00 PT.
