2024 represents the 26th consecutive year for the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. For Derby 2024, there is a pool ending in early November for the second time, open for three days; and a pool in late November for the 11th time, open for four days. The remaining pools traditionally are open for three days. Before 2010, all pools were open four days. In all, beginning with the 2023 Derby, there are six wagering pools on the potential runners.
The biggest change in the Derby Future Wager for many years was the expansion of wagering interests to 40 in 2023, guaranteeing huge odds of many of the entries.
For the 2024 Derby, for the fourth time a pool was scheduled early in the year of the Run for the Roses; and there is a sire pool in the fall of the preceding year for the ninth time, having debuted before the 2016 Derby.
2024 Kentucky Derby Pools
Pool 1: Tuesday, Oct. 30-Thursday, Nov. 2 (3 days)
Pool 2: Thursday, Nov. 23-Sunday, Nov. 26 (4 days)
Pool 3: Friday, Jan. 19-Sunday, Jan. 21 (3 days)
Pool 4: Friday, Feb. 16-Sunday, Feb. 18 (3 days)
Pool 5: Friday, March 15-Sunday, March 17 (3 days)
Pool 6: Thursday, April 4-Saturday, April 6 (3 days)
The Sire Future Wager will be held concurrently with Derby Pool 2.
The future wager for the Kentucky Oaks, which was introduced in 2003, also continues in 2024. Like all previous years except 2020 when a second Kentucky Oaks Pool was held in July, there is a single pool for the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager. The dates for that wager will be concurrent with Derby Pool 5. There will be an exacta pool for the Oaks future wager again.
Exacta wagering, offered in Kentucky Derby Pools 2 and 3 for the first time in 2009, has been offered in all Derby pools since 2010, as it has in the Kentucky Oaks pool.
For the first time in 2019, there was a betting interest in Derby Future Wager Pool 1 for all 3-year-old fillies. That option was continued for Pool 1 of the 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 future wager. Until this development, the Derby pools each consisted of individual wagering interests and a mutuel field, or “all others” betting interest. The mutuel field in the Kentucky Oaks bet includes all other 3-year-old fillies. In 2023, all 3-year-old fillies is listed as wagering interest number 39.
There were seven future wager pools before the 2020 Kentucky Derby, four of them held as originally scheduled before the first Saturday in May, and three more held before the first Saturday in September -- one in June, one in July, and one in August.
All bets in these future wager pools are $2 minimum wagers. There are no refunds on any wagers. If it is determined during the pools that one of the individual horses has suffered an illness, injury or other circumstance that will prevent that horse from competing in either race, wagering on that betting interest is suspended.
